So you want to foster a Shiba Inu? It can be extremely difficult work, time consuming work but also very rewarding! More than 3 years ago, my humom decided to start fostering dogs and hasn't turned back since. Saving Shibas Inc is a 501(c)3 rescue she started up and has helped out more than 60 dogs since it's inception! Sadly, it doesn't seem like the rescue thing is going away, but she is always looking for more "help". If you are interested in helping with rescue, please read on....

All of the Saving Shibas Inc foster homes have experience with Shibas and/or with Japanese breeds. They prefer this as it helps with taking in a foster dog. Unfortunately for the foster dogs, lots of terrible things have happened to them, and/or they just haven't been properly trained and socialized. Many of the foster dogs may require quite a bit of work (ie training, socialization, patience and a sense of humor) than a Shiba that you would get from a reputable breeder. You should never feel alone with this big project, and the folks at Saving Shibas Inc try their best to have a good track record with solid adoptions. They also take matching foster dogs to foster homes as seriously as they take creating those final adoptions. So, if you don't hear from them right away, please know that we are trying to find the right "foster Shiba" for you and your home environment.

They want to get to know you, your lifestyle and your skill level before giving you a dog to foster. They'll want to see if your personal dog has good manners and if he's comfortable with sharing his home. (Your dog doesn't have to be friends with your foster dog - but he should tolerate its presence.) They also want to be sure that everyone in your household is okay with the project and willing to participate in some way, especially, with double-checking those doors and gates, and reinforcing the new house manners you'll be teaching the dog. We Shibas are not easy dogs, and rescued Shibas can have their fair share of challenges to overcome.

They work with a local trainer in Redondo Beach, CA. He even worked with me! as well as our toughest cases. He is a godsend and truly an invaluable resource. Lucky you if you get to foster for Saving Shibas Inc, 'cause you'll learn a lot from Brian Lee (www.caninecounseling.com). Remember that the training is not to train the dog, but to train you on how to work with him! Lucky for you - the rescue group also pick up Brian's tab; however they urge you to learn all that you can from him and APPLY his techniques. Whatever you gain from Brian is always applied to the next foster, and the next foster, etc. Remember that everyone's goal is to make the foster Shiba better and adoptable AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

About the Rescued Shibas:

The dogs coming from shelters often smell bad, may have skin conditions and fleas. You aren't getting a shiny coated, well mannered, clean house pet. You will be proud when you make him one. We recommend to keep your dogs/pets separated from the rescues as their conditions may be contagious.

Fostering can be long term so be ready to make a commitment. It's fun, it’s rewarding, but it can take time to find the right match for your foster.

Know your own pets and their needs. If your personal dog is 15 and wobbly, let us know so we can match up a dog that will be suited to yours.

Just because your dog doesn't chase cats doesn't mean a foster won't. Let us know if you have a cat (or any other small pets), make sure your foster has been cat tested, and follow introduction instructions. If you feel uncomfortable about being able to do this properly, let us know! We'll hook you up with a foster that is more suitable.

The dogs coming from shelters often have kennel cough. And sometimes they get sicker before they get better. It'll go away, but come up with a plan to keep the KC germs away from your personal dogs until your foster is well.

Fosters might develop a behavior you find odd or interesting. You may find tail chasing cute, but it can be an obsessive behavior that has to be handled. Always bring up any new or odd behaviors. They could signal health issues or a behavior that needs to be addressed with training.

Let your neighbors know you have a foster and if possible, have them see/meet him. If he inadvertently gets out, they may recognize him.

"Run of the House" is something that our fosters must "earn". Because we don't know if the Shiba is an escape artist, a digger, a jumper, dog aggressive, child aggressive, resource guarder, etc., we firmly believe in tie downs or tethers, crates, and baby gates for at least the first month. Many of our homes have other pets (dogs, cats, birds, etc)., all new "fosters" must be under supervision at all times. When you cannot watch the, use tethers, crates and baby gates to keep everyone safe.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise.... "A good dog is a tired dog". This couldn't be more true with all of our fosters. Some require more than 2 miles a walk twice a day to keep them "well behaved". Others may need up to 5 miles twice daily. Each dog is different, but the formula is always the same. The more you are able to get them exercised and tired, the better behaving dog.

Shibas Need Socialization. Many of the rescued Shibas have come from homes that didn't do a lot of work with regards to socialization. For any new Shiba foster, the rescue group recommends "5 new places, 50 new faces" a week. They recommend that the foster Shibas go out for walks at least twice daily (even if they have access to a backyard)~ getting them out to see new sites, learning how to walk properly on a leash and seeing/meeting people is all very important in getting them ready for their new life. It is a commitment, but can easily become a routine. Luckily, rescued Shibas THRIVE in a routine and quickly adapt to their new home.

She had a great time, adapted to the new surroundings quickly and had a great time. It's been four years since that vacation, but we visited Santa Ynez and this time Winnie had a harder time adapting. Thank goodness for a crate, as she settled in and calmed down there. Once she got used to things, she had a great time at various wineries and hanging out in a big beautiful home and yard! All in all, we had a great time. Latest foster, Yumi, also came along and loved it.
It has more recently been a great way to educate potential adopters, and a even more gratifying way to keep in touch with former fosters. This past weekend, Winnie got to chase two rescue alumni around the park. Oh. What. Fun!
But, he was too aloof and disengaged to be adopted. They had taken in many dogs over that weekend and they were full. Time was running out and would I take a look at him?
Shiba 2 (Taro) was pretty friendly and they thought "maybe" he might get adopted.
Taro

Ichi

Both dogs seemed "Shiba" to me, and I had agreed to take Ichi. He seemed to be a bit shy, but since the shelter had their doubts about a successful adoption it made sense for him to come to rescue.
After the coordinator reviewed their files, they discovered that the dogs are friends and came into the shelter together. Being placed in separate kennels caused much stress on the two. Taro whimpered; Ichi became reclusive.
They are reunited since coming into rescue....and much happier. We would like for them to get adopted together. They do so much better when they are a pair.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-267488160450591502.post-34795475957906221712012-02-25T09:21:00.001-08:002012-03-20T22:17:26.584-07:00Where's Winnie? After reflecting back on our past blog posts, I have realized that there hasn't been a Winnie update in some time. Well, the Queen Diva has been well. She enjoys the company of some of our fosters, and others, well...let's say that they get a good look at her pearly fangs.
My sweetie girl has been having fun and continues to go out and enjoy Shiba meetups. She enjoys the company of my little niece and continues to "train" the fosters.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-267488160450591502.post-61890461374086364952012-02-23T21:39:00.001-08:002012-03-20T22:17:44.304-07:00Be a foster pawrentShibas are not easy dogs to keep/own/train. Shibas are even more difficult to foster since they are more stubborn about listening and trusting a person they just met.
However, if you love this breed, you may consider fostering them. There is nothing more rewarding than working with a Shiba, saving them from a terrible fate and giving them the second chance they deserve. If you are interested in becoming a foster volunteer (and you live in the Los Angeles area), please contact saveshibas@gmail.com and we will sign you up!
There are a ton of Shibas out there needing your help. The rescue lines haven't stopped ringing.... Below are photos of our current fosters.
Ichi and Taro:

Addie:

Meesha:

Keiro:

Yumi:

Hana:

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-267488160450591502.post-59441627748225240102011-12-11T19:54:00.000-08:002011-12-11T19:54:16.373-08:00When you know it's right

Thor

Sometimes when doing rescue, it is hard to determine if the potential adopter is the right one. Sometimes it is a gut instinct. Sometimes it can be a bunch of coincidental "signs" that seem to tell you that it is the right one. And sometimes, the potential adopter can provide the Rescued Shiba more than you ever could, whether that is more time, more training, more love, more exercise and more leadership.

Luckily, both Thor and Kiba found "more". As much as they needed their owners, their owners needed them. Within a week, both of them found loving homes (with awesome vacation homes too)!

Good luck boys. We will miss you both but we know that you will have amazing lives.

Meet Kiba. He is one of our latest foster Shibas. He's a cute boy that does a cute trick.... "beg" or "wave"...

As adorable as he is, he also has a bad case of separation anxiety. He'll howl, cry, jump from two story balconies, climb fences and run away. In the past few weeks that we've had him, we've been correcting him if he starts to get anxious. He's also been enrolled in doggy daycare so that he isn't really ever "left alone" and he can begin to socialize with other dogs. When we leave, we give him bully sticks and treats to keep him occupied.

Finally, when we leave - we don't make a big deal about it. We turn on the classical music and quietly leave without any big ceremony. When we come home - we don't acknowledge him until he's settled down. Only when he's calm (and after we've taken off our shoes, changed clothes, etc), do we say "hi" to him to let him out.

Other than this, we're tapped out on ideas... I guess we just need to keep working on it and hopefully over time it'll get better. If any of you have dealt with it, feel free to comment and share your tricks!

Thanks, and Kiba thanks you, too!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-267488160450591502.post-66172989474805052972011-10-14T13:28:00.001-07:002011-10-14T13:29:38.667-07:00When the rescue stories intersect...I have been meaning to write about this story, because it's not too often that our paths criss cross. I mean, LA is a big city, and there are a lot of Shibas and Shiba owners out here~ but we recently had two Shibas in our care and they both found amazing forever homes.
She was kept at the shelter but time was running out and she eventually was released to rescue. The kind rescue helpers at Mission Viejo contacted us on her last day and we immediately posted her up on Petfinder and AdoptaPet. Well, within hours, someone fell in love with her and she was quickly adopted.

Zeus was an owner surrender that came to us and was a total sweetheart. This easy going senior was such a pleasure to have and fit in everywhere. He enjoyed being out and socializing, he was cool hanging out in the backyard... He also lucked out and found a wonderful home after a few months of our foster home(s) troubleshooting his diet and getting him to lose a few pounds.

Well, not too long ago, I received an email from Zeus's family and was so touched:

"Yesterday I was in Palm Springs in a fancy pet store and asked the clerk something when a little Shiba stuck her head around the corner of their counter. She was small and looked around 2 years old. The woman said she had just adopted her a few weeks ago and added "can you believe someone threw her out of a car window?" I knew immediately it was "Lady" and she was also adopted from {Saving Shibas Inc}! "Lady" looks wonderful, healthy and happy. She had just had dental work done and was doing great. They were told she was 8 or 9 but I doubt she's more than 2 at the most. Very healthy looking now. She has also found a good home through your organization.

I feel so blessed to have met some wonderful people; people who are willing to share with you best practices, tips and tricks and just lend an ear.

One of these people is NYCSR's Jazzy and her foster mom. To read more on Jazzy (aka Jasmine), go here: http://nycshibarescue.org/2011/04/jasmine-incredible-supporters/. Jazzy and her foster mom took a few videos of their leg exercises to show us how it's done so that we can begin doing a few exercises for Addie. Just so that they are available, we thought we'd share them here...

Thanks Jazzy, thanks NYCSR and thank you Jazzy's foster mom!
Animal control officers picked her up after she had been hit by a car. Wonderful volunteers brought Addie to Los Angeles from Vegas and our surgeon will perform her surgery tomorrow. She has a broken leg and will need a plate to hold together her leg together.

This cute gal is a trooper and hardly cries. We would appreciate your donations, support, and well~ wishes. For updates on Addie, click below
